Stay standing, No chairs

Hi,

I caught the train today. Interesting you might say. Why am I telling you this. Well, on trains they have seats and 90% of everyone was looking for that one space to rest their ailing and weary legs. How so I asked myself. It was 8:30 in the morning and unless you had just finished your 12 hour shift of painting the Harbour Bridge I think most of us can stand for a train trip.

The reason. Our lives are sedentary enough. I can almost guarantee that most people will not be on their feet and moving for more then 3 hours a day. That includes incidental walking e.g walking to the fax machine, walking around the house doing housework.

Do the maths. Average working day=10 hrs, mainly sedentary with maybe an hour of lunch(if you are lucky) which you will sit for most of that. So your working day there will be 1/2 hr of movement.

Then you drive home or catch public transport where you will sit for up to another hour each way=2 hours of sitting.

You are at home and you have dinner for 1/2 hr then relax or spend time with the family and fair enough as that is the normal function of a family. That is what you should be doing.

Now comes sleep for 7 hours s that is just an average. Sometimes more, sometimes less.

Now I was being generous with a few of those figures, that adds up to 18.5 hrs of sedentary activity during a working week. As I said before, you add another hour onto your sleep, 1/2 onto your travel time, that does not give you much time for yourself to do anything to be fit or healthy. So next time you are on public transport, STAND UP  at least for a while as it may be the only physical activity you get.

Go ahead, do the calculation yourself and get back to me with some figures.

We need to be more conscious and aware to be more active or our bodies will suffer.

Watch this space if you want to know why our bodies need to be active.
